Callum Voisin will look to replicate his maiden win in Formula 3 at Spa, with only three races left in the Formula 3 Championship to recover from a difficult season.
After achieving pole position in Spa-Francorchamps last year, Voisin beat 2024 Formula 3 Champion Leonardo Fornaroli and Sebastian Montoya to the win. The 19-year-old will return to the circuit this weekend, hoping to replicate his triumph.
He has found it challenging to maintain the form he established in Bahrain this season. Sparse high-yielding point finishes have meant that the British-Swiss driver has stumbled down the drivers’ standings from third to 11th place.
The previous round in Silverstone is a clear example of his misfortune, as he failed to acquire any points. In stark contrast, last year, he claimed his first career feature race podium in Formula 3 at the circuit, finishing third.
Looking Ahead
With only three rounds left on the F3 calendar, Callum Voisin is travelling to Spa-Francorchamps this weekend, before the penultimate round in Budapest in August.
Voisin will have over a month between Hungary and the final round in Monza to prepare for a final Championship push. In May, between Bahrain and Imola, he said:
“I like to do quite a lot of simulator work, just because I like to turn up to the event knowing exactly what I’m going to do on the first push lap.”
The championship will be decided in September at the Autodromo Nazionale Monza, giving the Rodin Motorsport driver time to tend to the wounds inflicted by a difficult season.
The Formula E Rookie Test
Despite his struggles, Cupra Kiro gave Voisin an opportunity at Formula E’s rookie test, alongside former McLaren development driver Bianca Bustamante, in Berlin on 14 July.
Before the test, he said:
“I’m thrilled to be joining CUPRA KIRO for the Berlin Rookie Test and to get my first experience of Formula E.”
“The team has had an incredible growth trajectory this season, and I’m incredibly grateful for the opportunity to work with them in a professional environment.”
Voisin’s talent attracted the team principal of Cupra Kiro, Alex Hui, who said his “rapid rise through the ranks of single-seater racing speaks has been exciting to watch and speaks volumes about his natural talent and work ethic”.
Formula E has proved to be a rich opportunity for Formula 2 drivers to ascend in motorsport, with McLaren’s Taylor Barnard’s recent success in the sport. The 21-year-old made his debut for McLaren at Monaco in 2024, replacing an injured Sam Bird, and is currently third in the standings this year.
This could be a future option for Voisin. However, earning a spot on the Formula 2 grid as well as a Formula 1 Junior Academy have been Voisin’s goals for next season.
He said: “There are ongoing discussions”, but he emphasised how he is “solely focused on performing well and winning in Formula 3.”
With the conclusion of the 2025 Formula 3 championship on the horizon, Voisin will hope to partner with his ex-GB3 rival, Alex Dunne, at Rodin Motorsport next season.
A Drop in Momentum?
A strong weekend in Bahrain at the start of the season put the 19-year-old in a great position to fight Rafael Câmara and Tim Tramnitz for the Formula 3 title. He finished second in the feature race, accompanied by a fourth-place sprint race finish, which promoted him to third in the championship.
Imola yielded a different outcome the following weekend. Voisin went home empty-handed, with an 18th-place finish, while his rivals extended their advantage at the top of the standings.
He requires an assertive finish to the season, with a replication of last year’s superb victory at Spa, surely boosting his chances of rising in the Championship standings.
Many a driver has made the leap after a subpar season before him, but in a highly competitive field this season, will he be one of the few?
